In today’s globalized world, being bilingual or multilingual is a valuable asset that opens doors to diverse educational, cultural, and professional opportunities. Recognizing this, the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) district has embraced the State Seal of Biliteracy, a prestigious recognition awarded to high school seniors who demonstrate proficiency in two or more languages, including English. This program not only highlights linguistic achievements but also celebrates the rich cultural diversity of Chicago’s student population.

What Is the Seal of Biliteracy?
The Seal of Biliteracy is an accolade added to the diplomas and transcripts of graduating seniors who have proven their ability to communicate effectively in multiple languages. Students earning this distinction have met rigorous language proficiency criteria, including:
Scoring a 4 or higher on the Advanced Placement (AP) language exams, or
Meeting standards in other state-approved language assessments.
This recognition is more than an academic honor—it signifies a student’s readiness to thrive in a multilingual world and positions them as competitive candidates for colleges and careers.
Looking Ahead: Seal of Biliteracy in 2025
As CPS continues to champion multilingual education, the application process for the 2024-2025 Seal of Biliteracy is already underway. Interested seniors must meet the Illinois State Board of Education’s requirements for proficiency in English and a world language. Schools are encouraged to guide students through the application process, ensuring they meet all deadlines and criteria.
